International Bridges to Justice (IBJ)

Making Access to Justice Sustainable in Myanmar

The Programme aims to establish cost-efficient and sustainable Justice Centres to provide wide coverage of indigent and marginalised individuals (criminal defendants) with high quality pro bono legal aid. IBJ has opened four Justice Centres in two States and two Regions. They plan to open 5 more satellite offices in the near future. They will build an enabling environment for legal aid by developing defender tools and training, creating a community of practice for legal defenders, and involving government/police/prison stakeholders in programme efforts. Moreover, they will establish communication and collaboration between criminal defence lawyers and justice stakeholders in government informs justice policy implementation. With this aim, they will convene two national level round tables and 16 regional level round tables across the country.
